That Fits Your Goals

ALTPORT provides access to all three SEBI AIF categories — each designed for a distinct risk-return profile and investment horizon.

Category I · Growth Focused

Early Stage & Growth
Focused AIFs

Participate in India's structural growth story before it hits public markets

Category I AIFs invest in businesses at the early and growth stages — infrastructure projects, social impact ventures, and sectors driving India's long-term economic transformation. These are opportunities that exist well before they become publicly traded, giving investors access to compounding potential that public markets simply cannot offer. With professional fund management, governance oversight, and SEBI regulation, Category I AIFs are built for long-term, conviction-led capital deployment.

Minimum Investment₹1 Crore
Investment Horizon5–10 years
LiquidityLow (locked-in structure)
Risk ProfileMedium–High · Long-term conviction required

Access to investment opportunities across India's key structural growth sectors — unavailable through public markets
Potential for multi-bagger returns over 7–10 year horizon
Social impact and infrastructure options for purpose-led investors
Professional fund manager governance with SEBI oversight

Who Is This For?

Investor eligibility & ideal profile

1
High-conviction long-term investors

Comfortable with 5–10 year capital lock-in in exchange for potentially outsized returns.

2
UHNIs & Family Offices

Minimum ₹1 Crore ticket. Suitable for investors with a diversified existing portfolio seeking higher alpha.

3
Impact-oriented investors

Those seeking exposure to India's startup ecosystem, infrastructure buildout, or social impact investing.

4
Experienced investors

Cat I AIFs are best suited for investors who already hold liquid assets and are adding an illiquid growth sleeve.

Category II · Private Markets

Private Equity, Credit
& Real Estate AIFs

Institutional-grade private market exposure for HNIs

Category II AIFs include Private Equity, Real Estate, Structured Credit, and Special Situation funds. These strategies invest in unlisted companies, growth-stage enterprises, or credit-backed structures — creating value through business transformation and strategic capital. Multi-year horizons with medium to high risk, and superior risk-adjusted outcomes versus traditional market-linked products.

Minimum Investment₹1 Crore
Investment Horizon3–7 years
LiquidityLow–Medium (closed-ended)
Risk ProfileMedium–High
Sub-categoriesPE · Private Credit · Real Estate · Special Situations
Enquire About Cat II AIFs →
Private credit delivers stable, non-market-linked returns for capital preservation
Private equity exposure to India's unlisted growth companies
Real estate AIFs offer structured returns without direct property hassles
Institutional-grade diligence and sector-focused execution

Who Is This For?

Investor eligibility & ideal profile

1
Yield-seeking investors

Private credit AIFs target 13–18% IRR with structured repayment schedules — ideal for income-seeking HNIs.

2
Investors seeking non-market returns

Cat II returns are less correlated with public equity markets — valuable diversification in volatile periods.

3
UHNIs & institutional investors

Minimum ₹1 Crore. Suited for those with ₹5Cr+ in overall assets seeking a private markets sleeve.

4
PE-curious investors

Cat II PE AIFs allow participation in India's private equity growth story at ₹1Cr — not the traditional ₹10Cr+ PE minimum.

Category III · Absolute Returns

Long-Short, Quant
& Multi-Strategy AIFs

Generate alpha across market cycles — up and down

Category III AIFs specialise in long-short equity, arbitrage, quantitative, and multi-asset trading strategies — aiming to generate absolute returns regardless of market direction. Unlike traditional equity, these funds employ leverage, hedging, and tactical positioning to perform in both rising and falling markets. Daily or monthly liquidity structures make them more flexible than Cat I & II.

Minimum Investment₹1 Crore
LiquidityDaily / Monthly (open-ended)
Risk ProfileMedium–High (with downside protection)
Sub-categoriesLong-Only · Long-Short · Quant
LeveragePermitted (SEBI regulated)
Enquire About Cat III AIFs →
Designed to generate returns even when markets fall — not dependent on direction
More liquid than Cat I & II — daily or monthly redemptions available
Quant strategies remove human bias — systematic, data-driven stock selection
Ideal as a portfolio diversifier alongside existing long-only equity exposure

Who Is This For?

Investor eligibility & ideal profile

1
Investors seeking market-agnostic returns

If your existing portfolio is 80%+ long equity, Cat III provides genuine diversification through non-correlated strategies.

2
Sophisticated HNIs with 3+ year horizon

Despite higher liquidity, Cat III AIFs perform best over a full market cycle — minimum 3 years suggested.

3
Risk-aware growth investors

Long-short strategies target strong absolute returns while managing drawdown — less stomach-churning than pure equity.

4
Quant & algo-strategy enthusiasts

Access factor investing, momentum, and multi-strategy quant funds — normally reserved for institutional investors.

Our Selection Process

Every Focus Fund
Has Been Dissected First

ALTPORT's proprietary SOUL + 3Is framework ensures every AIF on our platform is skill-driven, not luck-dependent. Here's how we evaluate before you invest.

SOUL
SSkilled outperformance
OOutperformance over benchmark, consistently
U— Avoids Underperformance pitfalls
L— Eliminates Luck-based investment strategies
Every Focus Fund must pass the SOUL test — sustained, skill-driven outperformance over a full market cycle. If a fund's returns can be explained by luck, timing, or a one-time sectoral tailwind, it doesn't make our Focus Fund list.
I

Investment Manager Style

Clear, adaptable strategy with a consistent philosophy — not chasing whatever worked last quarter.

I

Investment Portfolio Quality

Rigorous assessment of underlying holdings, concentration, sector exposure, and risk management practices.

I

Investment Performance Consistency

Risk-adjusted returns and drawdown management across multiple market cycles — not just bull market numbers.

Result: Of the 1,800+ AIFs listed on our platform, only a curated set make ALTPORT's Focus Fund list. The rest are available for research — but we won't focus on what we haven't vetted.
Common Questions

Still Have Questions?
We Have Answers.

Alternative Investment Funds are privately pooled investment vehicles, registered with SEBI, that collect funds from sophisticated investors and deploy capital according to a defined investment policy. They invest in assets beyond traditional equities and bonds — including private equity, venture capital, real estate, structured credit, and long-short strategies.
The minimum investment in any AIF is ₹1 Crore per investor. The only exception is Angel Funds (a sub-category of Cat I), which have a minimum of ₹25 Lakhs. For employees or directors of the fund itself, the minimum is also ₹25 Lakhs.
Any Indian resident, NRI, PIO, or OCI can invest in AIFs, provided they meet the minimum investment requirement (₹1 Crore for most AIFs). Foreign investors are also eligible. AIFs are designed for high-net-worth individuals, ultra-HNIs, family offices, and institutional investors.
Category I AIFs invest in startups, SMEs, social ventures, and infrastructure — early-stage, long-horizon. Category II AIFs include private equity, real estate, structured credit, and special situations — medium-horizon, unlisted assets. Category III AIFs use complex trading strategies including long-short, leverage, and quant approaches to generate absolute returns — these are the most liquid of the three.
Liquidity varies by category. Category I and II AIFs are typically closed-ended with capital locked in for 3–10 years — early redemption may not be available or may attract high exit loads. Category III AIFs are often open-ended with daily or monthly liquidity. Always check the specific fund's offering documents before investing.
Tax treatment depends on the AIF category and its pass-through status. Most Cat I and Cat II AIFs have pass-through tax treatment — income is taxed in the hands of the investor at applicable rates. Cat III AIFs are taxed at the fund level. We strongly suggest consulting a tax advisor before investing, as the treatment can be complex depending on your residency status.
ALTPORT uses its proprietary 3Is framework — evaluating Investment Manager Style (consistent philosophy, not momentum-chasing), Investment Portfolio Quality (holdings, concentration, risk management), and Investment Performance Consistency (risk-adjusted returns across full market cycles). Only funds that demonstrate skilled, sustained outperformance — not luck or timing — make our Focus Fund list.
Yes. Each scheme of an AIF can have a maximum of 1,000 investors. Angel Funds under Category I have a separate limit of 200 investors. This exclusivity is part of what makes AIFs institutional-grade — small investor pools mean each investor gets more attention and the fund can be more agile.
